# Run the monthly accrual

> Calculate every employee's end-of-service benefit at a month-end, and follow up anything the run could not calculate.

Each month the platform works out every employee's cumulative benefit at the month-end. The increase on the previous month is the **monthly accrual**, and it is posted to each employer's liability ledger.

**The calculation runs automatically** the night after each month ends. If the platform was down at month-end, it catches up the next night. Your job is to check it ran, clear anything it could not calculate, and run a month by hand when you need to. The regulator reviews the results.

## Open Monthly Accruals

**Monthly Accruals** is not in the admin menu. Add `/regulator/liability/monthly-accruals` to the platform address in your browser, for example `https://<platform address>/regulator/liability/monthly-accruals`. The page opens with its own menu, showing **Monthly Accruals** and **Computation Exceptions**. To return to the admin workspace, go back in your browser.

## Check or run a month

</Frame>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the month end (1)">
    The page opens on the last month-end. Pick another with **Month end**. It must be the last day of a month, and the month must have ended.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Run monthly accrual (2)">
    A message confirms **Monthly accrual run started**. The status moves from **Processing** to **Completed** when every employee is calculated.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check Exceptions (3)">
    Anything other than 0 means some employees could not be calculated. See [Computation exceptions](#computation-exceptions).
  </Step>
</Steps>

The **Employer accrual register** below shows each employer's employees, opening liability, monthly accrual and closing liability. **View employees** opens one employer's employees for the month. The run statuses and the employee view are described in the regulator's guide: [Monthly accruals](/regulator/monthly-accruals).

<Tip>
  You normally only need **Run monthly accrual** after fixing exceptions, or if a month shows **Not run** a day or two after it ended. Months must be run in order. Employees registered during a month get their opening balance at the previous month-end, so their first monthly accrual is at the end of the month they were registered.
</Tip>

## Computation exceptions

Add `/regulator/liability/computation-exceptions` to the platform address, or select **Computation Exceptions** in the menu on the Monthly Accruals page.

<Frame caption="Accrual records the run could not finalise">

</Frame>

Each row shows the employee, employer, the exception code and what it blocks. The usual cause is missing source data, such as an employee's salary or opening balance. Correct the employee's record (see [Work on an employer's behalf](/admin/employees)) and run the month again.
